How to Care for Your Hunting Gear (So It Lasts Season After Season)

Your Gear Works Hard. Take Care of It.

A quality hunting cap or hoodie isn't just clothing — it's part of your system. It manages scent, breaks up your outline, and keeps you comfortable in the field. Treat it right and it'll last for years. Neglect it and you'll be replacing it every season.

Here's how to properly care for your hunting apparel from wash day to storage.

Washing Your Hunting Apparel

The biggest mistake hunters make is throwing their camo in with the regular laundry. Standard detergents contain UV brighteners — chemicals that make your clothes look bright and clean under normal light but glow like a beacon under a deer's UV-sensitive vision.

Always wash hunting apparel with a scent-free, UV-free detergent specifically designed for hunting clothes. A few key rules:

  • Wash in cold water to preserve fabric integrity and color
  • Turn garments inside out to protect embroidery and printed camo patterns
  • Avoid fabric softeners — they coat fibers and trap odors over time
  • Air dry when possible; high heat from dryers can break down water-resistant coatings and shrink fitted caps

Caring for Your Camo Caps

Trucker-style caps with structured fronts need a little extra attention. Avoid tossing them in the washing machine if you can — the agitation can warp the bill and crush the crown.

Instead, hand wash with a soft brush and mild, scent-free soap. Rinse thoroughly and reshape the crown while it's still damp, then air dry on a rounded surface (a coffee can or ball works great) to hold the shape.

For light field grime between washes, a damp cloth wipe-down is usually enough to keep your cap fresh without a full wash.

Caring for Hoodies & Layering Pieces

Fleece and cotton-blend hoodies are more forgiving than technical shells, but they still benefit from proper care. Wash inside out in cold water, skip the fabric softener, and air dry or tumble dry on low. High heat is the enemy of fleece — it can mat the fibers and reduce the insulating loft that keeps you warm in the stand.

Check seams and cuffs regularly for wear. A little seam sealer on stress points can extend the life of a hoodie significantly.

Scent Control Between Washes

You don't need to wash your gear after every single hunt. Between washes, store hunting apparel in a sealed bag or tote with natural scent-control materials like cedar, dirt, or pine needles from your hunting area. Keep it away from household odors — cooking smells, detergents, and fuel can soak into fabric fast.

Some hunters keep a dedicated set of clothes that never enter the house — they go straight from the field to a sealed bag in the garage or truck.

End-of-Season Storage

Before you pack your gear away for the off-season, give everything a thorough wash, inspect for damage, and make any repairs. Store in a breathable bag or tote — not a plastic bin that traps moisture and promotes mildew. Toss in a few cedar blocks to deter moths and keep things smelling neutral.

A little end-of-season maintenance means your gear is ready to go the moment season opens again — no scrambling, no surprises.
